Range Rover Sport TDV6 4x4's...
The Range Rover Sport is a smaller and more athletic version of the larger, more traditional Range Rover. Unlike other models in the Range Rover range, the Sport is primarily designed to be driven on-road, where it corners precisely and with the minimum of fuss. Coupled with the top 5.0-litre supercharged engine, it provides nothing short of an electric drive. Being a Land Rover, the Sport also comes up with the goods off-road too. It's packed with sophisticated systems, such as Terrain Response - a system that optimises the car's off-road performance depending on the road surface. Inside it's comfortable and refined, though cars from Summer 2009 are better still. These Range Rover Sports benefit from a thorough facelift that brought a much upgraded interior, improved engines and a wider range of options.
The entry-level engine is a 2.7-litre TDV6 diesel, that's also found in other Land Rover and Jaguar models. It may only have 190bhp - which is fairly small for such a heavy car - but it propels the Sport from 0-62mph in 12.7 seconds and feels stronger than the figures suggest once the car is up to speed. It's also the best choice for economy, returning a respectable 28mpg.
Early 2007 saw the introduction of a 3.6-litre diesel V8 - badged TDV8 - with 272bhp and enormous amounts of pulling power (more than the supercharged V8 petrol in fact). This gives a 0-62mph time of 9.2 seconds but it is the effortless fashion in which it gains speed, which is truly impressive. A non-supercharged 4.4-litre V8 option was available for a brief period following the Sport's 2005 launch, but its thirst and relative lack of performance meant it was unpopular and was soon phased out. That left the 4.2-litre V8 Supercharged model as the sole petrol option. It's thunderously fast (0-62mph takes just 7.6 seconds) but sounds great too with a rumbling engine note. The standard gearbox is a six-speed automatic - it offers quick changes but can be a bit hesitant to kickdown at times, however it does come with a sequential manual change and a 'sport' mode which quickens things. Exceptional brakes ensure the Range Rover Sport is as good at stopping as it is accelerating.
