Nissan King Cab 4x4s
Nissan introduced brand new versions of its Pickup to the UK at the beginning of 2002. The range of trucks was new from the ground up and includes two Single Cabs (4x2 and 4x4), a 4x4 King Cab and a 4x4 Double Cab. The high spec Navaras have been discontinued.
As well as the obvious design differences, the Pickup range also has a relatively new engine which is installed right across the range. It's a derivative of the 2.5-litre 16-valve direct-injection turbodiesel found in the Patrol GR. Maximum power of 133 bhp is generated at 3,600rpm and it develops a hefty 224 Ib/ft of peak torque at 2,000rpm.
With this amount of torque it is no surprise that the Pickup performs extremely well with little turbo lag and, despite the lack of common rail injection, it is quiet and refined.
The ride and handling are well up to par, both on and off the road and the change from rear-wheel drive to high range four-wheel drive can be performed on the move.
The Single Cabs are fitted with a three-seater bench and a column shift gear change but the 4x4 retains the floor mounted transfer lever. The King Cab has two front seats and two 'occasional' side-facing folding seats while the Double Cabs are full five-seaters. The tailgate is operated by a single centrally mounted handle and is held at 90° by strong supports.
Load length varies from 2,235mm (SC) down to 1,395mm for the Double Cabs. Payload ranges from 1,055kg up to 1,115kg for the Single Cabs. All of the 4x4s can tow a three tonne braked trailer.
Servicing is at every 6,000 miles.
The Nissan King Cab is an excellent pick-up with a splendid engine.
