Jeep Grand Cherokee 2.7 SW 4x4's...

Jeep has a strong reputation for building strong off roaders and the Grand Cherokee is no exception. It may not look as rugged as some 4x4s, but thanks to a clever four-wheel drive system it is impressively agile on rough terrain and can cope with seemingly impossible situations. Unfortunately this ability isn't matched on the road. While the Jeep is a good long distance cruiser with a spacious cabin and hugely comfortable seats, it's not particularly composed through corners and the ride is unsettled over poor quality roads. However it is available with some strong diesel engines, although the thirsty petrol models are best avoided.

Unsurprisingly most people opt for a diesel model. Early models came with a 3.1-litre TD but this was crude and noisy. With 138bhp, performance was sluggish too while economy was still poor at just 24mpg. In 2002 this was replaced by a more refined common-rail 2.7-litre CRD engine with 161bhp. Not only is it quicker with better pulling power, but it's also more frugal, managing 29mpg. All engines are good and none are limp-wristed. Five cylinder turbo-diesel is most economical and also sounds pretty good. Alternatively, there's a strong V6 and more potent V8s offering considerable performance.
