Diesel 4X4 vehicles are available in a basic utility format up to a luxurious Land Rover / Mercedes ML.
The basic diesel 4X4's i.e. Daihatsu Fourtrak have a plain cloth seat covering and removable carpentry - ideal for scrubbing when dirty. The top-of-the-range diesel vehicles such as the Mercedes ML, Range Rover, Volvo XC90, come fully equipped with leather, climate control, satellite navigation and having the added specification of DVD TV, multifunction steering wheels and much more - all as factory fitted extras.
What better towing vehicle? A diesel 4X4 will tow virtually any horse box, trailer or caravan whether they have one or two axles. Most diesel 4X4's will tow around 3 tonnes, but always check in your vehicle owner's handbook.
The Mitsubishi L200 and Nissan Navara double cabs are available in both 2 wheel or 4 wheel drive and have become very popular with self employed people. They are a good workhorse and can be used with a butt liner to protect the bodywork or a truckman top to securely store tools and equipment. For agricultural use, you can fit an aluminium Ifor Williams body with a mesh rear door.The cabs are as comfortable as a large car or 4X4 and available with a very high specification.
There is also the diesel 4X4 4x4 which is a 3 door 4X4 such as the Isuzu Trooper, Landrover TD5, Mitsubishi Shogun and Landrover Freelander. These have the side windows covered and usually don't have rear seats. Used regularly amongst the veterinary profession and by large contractors in areas such as road surfacing, local council, highway maintenance divisions etc.
If you will be using the vehicle off road, then descent control and active suspension (available on the Landrover TD5 and the VW Touareg) are invaluable features.
